Remembering a loss of one of our own

12 years ago today, while serving in Afghanistan, Army Staff Sergeant Tim McGill was killed by a gunman. Tim was a member of the RFD before beginning his military career. The RFD will always remember Tim and will always support our military forces.
It has been twelve years since our friend, Staff Sergeant Tim McGill, was taken from us in Afghanistan, and not a day goes by that I don’t wonder what his life would have been if that tragedy had never happened. Tim was more than a soldier, he was a wonderful man, handsome, kind, and someone whose heart was always focused on others. I’ll never forget how, after my surgery, he reached out just to check on me. His words of encouragement and care meant the world, and they were a true reflection of who he was. Always lifting others, always giving of himself.
I often imagine the future Tim never had. The family he might have raised, the adventures he would have taken, the countless people he would have continued to inspire. That loss will always ache deeply. And yet, his presence is still felt so strongly through those who loved him most.
One of the most beautiful examples of this is his sister Megan, who I have been blessed to remain close to. With her husband Logan, she is raising her children, Charley, Lenni and Nash, in a way that keeps their uncle’s memory alive. Every story she shares, every tradition she keeps, every lesson she passes down is a testament to the brother she loves so deeply. Through her devotion, Tim’s spirit continues to shine and his legacy continues to grow.
Though his life was cut short, Tim’s impact is everlasting. His memory is not only a reminder of the true cost of sacrifice, but also of the kind of person we should all strive to be. Brave, compassionate, and unwaveringly kind. He may be gone, but he will never, ever be forgotten. Continue to rest in God’s sweet peace my friend. You remain in my heart and in all whose lives you touched. ❤️
