By Ex-Chief Louis Warnet Jr.
July 26, 2023

July 24, 2023 started with an activated alarm at 02:15 A.M. and then a second activated alarm at 04:15 A.M. both with negative results. Later in the afternoon, both Ramsey and Allendale received calls of a possible MVA involving a bus with wires down and fire on Franklin Turnpike at the border of Allendale and Ramsey. Both towns were dispatched to find that there was not an MVA, but a transformer on a pole had failed and caused a power outage in the area. A couple of homes were checked at the request of the homeowners in the area of the outage finding no smoke or fire to ease their minds as Rockland Electric worked to restore power. Just as units returned to the firehouses, several calls were received at PD that a vehicle had gone over the side of the Franklin Turnpike overpass and had crashed down onto Rt. 17 with entrapment and possible fire. All Emergency services were dispatched to respond. Upon arrival, units found 2 vehicles had collided at the bottom of the ramp after one of the vehicles came off of the bridge above, went through the guardrail and through some trees and collided with the second vehicle at the bottom of the ramp. Both drivers required extrication and were transported to the hospital with injuries. Neither vehicle was on fire, however they needed to be secured before towing. The southbound side of the highway was shutdown for a time until the extrication was complete and the victims transported. 2 lanes were reopened until the scene was investigated and cleared. The accident is under investigation.
