The FDNY lost 343 firefighters that day, as they courageously ran into danger to save lives while the towers were collapsing.

Firefighters were among the first responders to reach the site, and they worked tirelessly amid the chaos, confusion, and destruction. Despite the great risk, they were committed to evacuating people from the buildings and providing medical aid.

The legacy of those fallen firefighters continues to be honored every year on this anniversary. Their bravery, sacrifice, and dedication to public service are remembered as an enduring example of heroism in the face of unimaginable tragedy. The FDNY’s response is a reminder of the crucial role that emergency services play, and how they selflessly put themselves in harm’s way to protect others.
